Safety around electronics in the library.
Keeping safe in the library is a team effort, here's a few ways both staff and patrons can keep safe and healthy in the library:
Safety around electronics:
- Should you spot a frayed wire or a damaged circuit, report it immediately, so we can eliminate risk of electrocution.
- Avoid cluttering desks, as objects falling on computers or keyboards is damaging to both them and possibly you, should your hands be in the way!
- Liquids should be kept away from any electric-powered item, ranging from cables to computers, this is a hazard should the liquid spill onto it.
- Don't plug in too many cables to a power board- keep it to one to two items per spot on the board.
Manual handling:
- When lifting heavy things, always lift with your knees, don't bend your back!
- .Use mechanical lifts/aids where possible!
- Don't try to carry too many books at once, heavy loads aren't good for you.
And finally, ergonomics (posture, desk organisation, ect):
- Don't stack up high piles of books and such on a desk
, should you need to study or catalogue then a bigger desk area should be used, to spread things out in much lower stacks. - Adjust your chair so that you are sitting upright, not slouching, to minimise back pains and bad posture.
- Organise your space so that everything you need most often is within comfortable reach, to minimise stretching and straining.
